After I've wiped the rebel army out...I'll personally be pulling out the corruption that infests this empire by its roots! No matter who is involved... no matter how powerful their position...I'm sure you all agree.
~ General Budo to the Empire's officers, despite not having ended any corruption.

The Great General Budo is a major antagonist in Akame Ga Kill!. He was one of the most feared and respected generals in the Empire, as well as leading the Imperial Guard, the force tasked with protecting the royal palace. Noted for his immense strength and prowess in battle, he commanded much respect from his subordinates and other factions.

He was voiced by Hozumi Gōda in the Japanese and by Josh Morrison in the English dub.

What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]

  • Among several one-dimensionally evil villains, Budo is clearly meant to be a morally gray character who should be likable in the eyes of the audience, but he is not likable at all. His personality is completely superficial and he barely seems better than villains like Honest or Esdeath. The only difference is that he is not sadistic.
  • Despite claiming to hate the Empire, he has no compelling reason to follow it other than the fact that he is from a family of generals and is "fulfilling duties."
  • The antipathy between him and Honest had good potential for conflict within the Empire, but it leads nowhere.
  • Despite being said to be the second strongest in the Empire, second only to Esdeath, he is not used at all in the plot and, although he has a greater role in the manga, the level of his power is never deepened.
  • Among so many powerful members in Night Raid like Akame and Tatsumi, he dies precisely to Mine, who divides opinions a lot.

Trivia[]

  • His anime version is considered Scrappy more than his manga version, where he has some cool interactions with the Jaegers, beats up Syura, and goes against him, which is satisfying to see. But in the end, both versions are poorly utilized antagonists.
  • General Budo, Prime Minister Honest and Merraid Oarburgh are the original Akame Ga Kill characters who were Scrappies.
