Frederick Charles Krueger, also known as the Nightmare, is the main antagonist of the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. He is based on his original incarnation with the same name.
He was portrayed by Jackie Earle Haley.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Freddy Krueger's characterization in the 2010 remake deviates significantly from his original portrayal, lacking the humor and charm that defined him in the earlier films. The attempt to return to a more serious depiction resulted in a character who appears entirely humorless and uninspired.
- In this reboot, Freddy is depicted as a groomer who molested children rather than murdering them. This portrayal is not only more disturbing but also detracts from the character's original menace. Freddy's overly sexualized behavior, particularly towards Nancy, is off-putting and fails to offer the intriguing possibility of him being an innocent man wrongfully accused of pedophilia, which would have provided a more compelling motivation for his quest for vengeance.
- His scares usually rely on jumpscares.
- Freddy Krueger is also very annoying and sounds nothing like the original Freddy, in fact his voice sounds quite edgy like someone trying to do a bad impression of a character like Shadow The Hedgehog.
- Some of the CGI effects used for Freddy are notably unconvincing and diminish the impact of his presence.
- The portrayal was so poorly received that Robert Englund, the original Freddy Krueger actor, publicly criticized the film by holding a sign reading "2010 REMAKE SUCKS!", and he's not wrong there at all.
- The redesign of Freddy in the remake lacks the terrifying presence of the original character, with his new appearance being less intimidating and somewhat reminiscent of Supreme Leader Snoke from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While the original Freddy's design was distinctive and memorable, the remake's version fails to make a lasting impression.
Trivia[]
- The original Freddy was supposed to be a child molester, but this was scrapped in order to avoid accusations of exploiting the spate of highly publicized child molestation cases at the time, so Freddy was made into a child murderer instead.
- According to the screenwriter, Eric Heisserer, Freddy was originally written as an innocent man falsely accused of child molestation before this idea was scrapped and made only implied at best.
