Have I ever steered you wrong?
~ -Film-Flam every time he's about to steer them wrong.

Flim-Flam is a Hispanic street child who briefly joined the Scooby-Doo gang to assist them in returning all the most terrifyingly powerful ghosts and demons back into the Chest of Demons. He only appeared in the 1985 show The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, but was brought back briefly in the 2019 DTV movie The 13th Ghost of Scooby-Doo.

He was voiced by Susan Blu.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • He was considered the most annoying character of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo despite sharing screentime with the actual Scrappy. Weirdly enough, this show was also one of the few times Scrappy-Doo was considered well-used, meaning Film-Flam almost exists to fill the Scrappy quota. This has made him infamous in the fandom, as a Scrappy considered worse than Scrappy himself once was.
  • Some people regarded him as an insulting caricature for Hispanic viewers, being a character whose major personality trait was being a cowardly crook.
  • His major character trait was being a thief who was much less intelligent than he thought he was. Every time he got caught, he would beg to be released and never learned anything of his past actions, which quickly became annoying for the viewers.
  • A lot of viewers had a hard time finding him endearing, being a mischievous scam artist that had no problem conning even his own friends.
  • He's also constantly cracking jokes more often that any other character in any of the Scooby-Doo shows, even in moments that are meant to be serious, and is the major source of comic relief in the show over Scooby and Shaggy, which considering everything else most people found the character more obnoxious that funny.
  • He was an attempt to copy Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, who, while not a Scrappy, was already a polarizing character in his own right.
  • He was added in an attempt to appeal to kids despite Scrappy-Doo still being around. This time, however, didn't work, as the show was cancelled with no conclusion, and the following show had to reboot the franchise with neither character.
  • In a similar way to Scrappy, he replaced the role of Fred and Velma as the mystery solvers of the group (who at that moment had being deleted from the show) which made viewers just wonder why they didn't bring them back.
  • His characterization is inconsistent, as he's shown to be both the smartest member of the group, and the one who causes more problems in general.
  • He commonly overestimates his own intelligence and proposes poor strategies that cause the gang more problems than he actually resolves is worth the trouble.
  • In Mystery Incorporated, Fred and Daphne find a statue in a museum between the criminals they have arrested, which prompts Daphne to reveal his conman antics gotten him a 25 years to life sentence in prison.

Trivia[]

  • His appearance in The 13th Ghost of Scooby-Doo, where he has matured and leaves his conman antics behind, is considered by some fans to have brought more depth to his character and has been much better received, although he still hasn't been released from his Scrappy status yet, partially because of the rather mixed reception the movie had with the fanbase.
  • Mystery Incorporated mentions him have being sentenced twenty-five years to life in jail for his con antics, but that show happened in an alternative universe, so it is really just a potshot towards the character rather that a confirmation of his fate.
  • His own creator, Tom Ruegger, admitted to hating him and finding him a forced addition to the show, and revealed that his inclusion was due to a network mandate where the show needed a character that could appeal to the child demographic. He also declared the character made him appreciate Scrappy-Doo in retrospect.
