~ Euron's cringy comment to Jamie Lannister, showcasing his nature as a Scrappy. |
Euron Greyjoy is a major antagonist of Game of Thrones, being a supporting antagonist of Season 6 and a secondary antagonist of Season 7 and Season 8.
He is the uncle of Theon and Yara Greyjoy, and a pirate who plans to take the Iron Throne and destroy Westeros' systems and beliefs.
He was portrayed by Pilou Asbæk.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He represents one of worst aspects of the later seasons of Game of Thrones, using funny and nonsensical quips instead of the intellectual and complex dialogue used in the earlier seasons.
- His first scene has him making countless cock jokes to his nephew (referencing what Ramsay had done to Theon), which essentially ruins the build up of the speech that Theon made previously.
- Despite Kinslaying being one of if not the biggest taboos in Westeros, he publicly admits to murdering his brother (who was also the rightful ruler of the iron islands) which somehow gets almost all iron born to accept him as their new king.
- He somehow manages to build a gigantic fleet in the matter of a few weeks.
- He makes a downright cringe-inducing comment to Jamie Lannister that is basically a death threat combined with a sexual harassment, starting with stating that him and Jamie are like brothers (given Euron is guilty at fratricide, him saying someone is like a brother to him is never a good sign) and finishing with "A finger in the bum?".
- He lacks any of the mystic and mysterious elements of his book-counterpart, making him a far less intriguing character. He also has none of his book counterpart’s charisma or cunning.
- Despite being hyped up as more evil than Joffrey and Ramsay he comes off as more of a goofy and extremely obnoxious pirate than a genuine threat.
- His fleet repeatedly manages to sneak up on the heroes despite it's enormous size making Daenerys and her allies come off as extremely incompetent.
- Despite previously showing no issue with kinslaying he spares Yara and merely ties her up somewhere for Theon to easily rescue her, invalidating the previous genuinely dramatic scene of him capturing her.
- He achieves several unrealistic and implausible victories such as scoring three perfect hits on a row on a flying dragon, making him somewhat of a Villain Stu.
- He shows an unbelievable amount of plot armor as he survives the destruction of his fleet completely unharmed and somehow manages to swim to the exact place Jaime is at.
- His final fight with Jaime is widely considered to be one of the worst edited fight scenes in the show. And his last words are considered one of the worst lines of the season because of how ridiculous he delivered it.
- He doesn't even get a satisfying death scene with him dying content for "killing Jaime Lannister".
- His smugness is unparaleled in the franchise, as he's seen sporting a smug smile whenever possible, even when his death scene portrayed him as otherwise pathetic.
- Even Pilou Asbæk (Euron's actor) was disappointed in his role, having wanted to play someone more similar to the calculating and interesting Euron from the books.
Trivia[]
- While the book version of Euron has no redeeming qualities, he does not count as a Scrappy as he is one of the most popular characters in the series and is praised for his goals, powers, and legitimately threatening personality.
