The Dweller-in-Darkness is the overarching antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings.
It is a powerful alien who was sealed within a mountain after waging war with the Ta Lao people and now seeks to escape in order to terrorize the Earth.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is essentially an in-name only adaptation, as in the comics, The Dweller was a humanoid demon who required fear to survive, but here, he is a mindless monster who simply seeks to eat souls.
- He is a generic doomsday villain with no personality or goals beyond wanting to destroy Ta Lao and Earth for no reason. Even when pretending to be Ying-Li, he doesn’t show much emotion or cunning in his manipulation.
- His appearance distracts from the message of the film about family as his fight interrupts Shang-Chi and Mandarin’s confrontation in favor of a generic final battle.
- Many fans have argued that Mandarin being the final villain would’ve served as a more fitting climax for the movie than The Dweller due to his role as Shang-Chi’s father, while the Dweller has no personal connection to him.
Trivia[]
- Only the film version of The Dweller is a Scrappy as the comic’s version has more personality and better fights.
