Durza is the main antagonist of the 2006 20th Century Studios film Eragon.
He was portrayed by Robert Carlyle.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is an extremely bland and uninteresting villain with no character development whatsoever.
- Even though he can conjure fire wherever he wants, he is way too stupid to simply conjure it where Arya is standing.
- When King Galbatorix wants him to retrieve Saphira, Durza decides for unknown reasons that he should develop a bizarre obsession with killing Eragon, but in the fashion of Thanos, he doesn't seem remotely inclined to do it himself.
- He doesn't use his sword like in the novel, preferring to use magic in duels instead, and he looks pretty goofy and incompetent during the few action scenes he's a part of. No Evil is Cool vibes are to be found here, no memorable lines delivered. He is nothing but a dime-a-dozen hitman with an obnoxious personality with nothing to detract from it at all.
- Even though he says Eragon is his, the Urgals try to kill him at Farthen Dur anyway.
- He flies into battle against Eragon and Saphira on a beast of dark smoke or vapor he conjured out of his butt with what Saphira describes as dark magic. Durza has no problems creating or sustaining the Beast. This is impossible even for a Shade because it really violates the laws of magic established in the novel and briefly touched down on earlier in the film, because nobody can conjure a dragon-like monster with a large structure and enough density to support their weight and divert between maintaining it and blocking Saphira's fire breath with a magical barrier. Even if they omitted several crucial scenes, Fox didn't need to screw up the scenes they kept, doing so anyway.
- His novel counterpart has some depth to his character like parents that he cared about but it was cut from the film making fans even more angry as they were denied a possibly interesting character and left with a generic destroyer. Literally all of his backstory was cut out of the film denying any explanation or worldbuilding to why he even exists at all.
Trivia[]
- Durza is one of four Eragon characters to be a Scrappy, along with King Galbatorix and Arya. Interestingly, none of them are Scrappies in the books.
