NOTE: This article specifically covers the character's representation in the HBO TV series. His book counterpart is not a Scrappy. |
Prince Doran Nymeros Martell, also known simply as Doran Martell, is a minor character on Game of Thrones, he acts as a minor character in season 5 and a minor protagonist in season 6. He is the head of House Martell, the Prince of Dorne, and the Lord of Sunspear.
He is played by Alexander Siddig.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He's a wasted and highly altered character, being presented completely different from his character in the books. While crippled and opposed to a direct attack on the Lannisters, he supports the union with the Targaryens. On the other hand, his television character is completely wasted and has none of his book counterpart's agenda.
- He is completely unaware of the actions being carried out under his nose: Jamie and Baron are hired to rescue Myrcella while Ellaria and the Serpents try to kidnap her. Both things are avoided only by chance thanks to Ahirio Hota who is not Dorani.
- After Ellaria tries to kidnap Myrcella he gives her a second chance - forcing her to kiss his hand and drink wine alongside Jaime, which helps her poison Myrcella. He then walks alongside Ellaria unaware of her attempt to assassinate him.
- He is presented as a character lacking any fascinating moments, agency or charisma while the people around him have more presence. Even his brother Oberyn was more interesting.
- His stupidity leads to both his death and the death of his son in a coup in Dorne.
- Many fans criticized Duran's death while a respected actor like Alexander Siddig played him for a few scenes before he was suddenly killed off.
- Even the actor Alexander Siddig was surprised by the writing of his death as he signed with the producers to play in season 6 in four episodes, but was killed in the first while the writers changed the plot path.
