Diego Torres is the main antagonist of Season 4 of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why. He was the best friend of the late Monty de la Cruz, seeking to find the truth behind his death.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is clearly added into existence in Season 4 for no other reason than giving the show a new plot and giving Monty sympathy. He was supposedly best friends with Monty but they were never seen together so his existence feels like a retcon as it has been shown multiple times that none of the jocks actually like Monty. It is made worse by the fact that the show just acts like he has been there the whole time.
- His goal of wanting to avenge Monty, who is an unintentionally unsympathetic rapist with no remorse for his crimes makes his goal of wanting to avenge him hard to sympathize with. Both him and the narrative even blatantly glosses over the fact when Clay calls him out for "honoring a rapist." Somehow the show makes it feel more like Clay is in the wrong for calling out Monty for what he did.
- He is very annoying, nosy, egotistical and constantly torments the protagonists over framing Monty (even making Clay go into a mental breakdown to taunt him) or even lesser reasons which is annoying to watch to many viewers in addition to the aforementioned reasons his motives are unsympathetic. Despite this, the narrative tries to treat him as some anti-villain you are suppose to sympathize with.
- Despite the narrative treating him as smart, he is stupid enough to think he can stop a school shooter with a baseball bat.
- The narrative tries to make him sympathetic in the most plot-forced and out-of-nowhere way possible as when he gets into a fight with Justin (which is largely his own fault for provoking him), a cop shows up out of nowhere to stop him and racially target him then drag him away to everybody's dismay. This is the shows desperate attempt to use racial profiling as a relevant topic but feels completely forced and even has the cop aim a gun at Diego just to attempt to hammer down the problem more, which feels unrealistic.
