Wade Winston Wilson, also known as Weapon XI, is a major character in the 2009 superhero film X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
He is a former mercenary who was genetically altered and turned into a sentient weapon by William Stryker. His character was largely hated due to being a massive deviation from Deadpool, his comic counterpart.
He was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds for post-Weapon XI Wade Wilson, and Scott Adkins for Weapon X stunt double.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- While the comic Deadpool was known for his jokes and fourth wall breaking, none of that is present here because his mouth is sewn shut for most of his screen time, which fans absolutely hated. It doesn’t help that Fox executive Tom Rothman absolutely didn’t like Deadpool.
- Fans believe that he was more accurate to the comics before he became Weapon XI, as he was a mercenary who was actually able to speak.
- The audience found his massive arm blades to be ridiculous, as he would be unable to bend his elbows while they were retracted.
- The audience also hates his design, as it looks nothing like the comic book character.
- While there was an end credits scene that showed him breaking the fourth wall after his mouth was reopened, it did little to save the character in the eyes of the fans.
- Overall, he is considered one of the worst parts of an already despised movie due to being a completely unfaithful adaptation of a largely popular comic book character.
- Even 20th Century Fox is aware of how much he's hated, as there were numerous jokes made at his expense in the Deadpool solo movie, which has a more accurate and thus more liked version of the character.
- Ryan Reynolds, who played the character, doesn't even like him (really a surprise to no one as he already knew the character was going to be bad), as a lot of the jabs at him made in the Deadpool solo movie were Ryan's idea.
- In fact, he hated the character so much that in Deadpool 2, he kills him in that movie as the titular main protagonist. This scene also shows that not even the true Deadpool likes this version of himself.
