Damian Wayne, also known as Nightwing and Robin, is a major antagonist of the Injustice games by Netherrealm Studios.
Raised by the league of Assassins, he agrees with Superman’s tyrannical and murderous methods of fighting crime, so he betrays Batman and joins Superman’s Regime.
He was voiced by Neal McDonough in the first game, and then by Scott Porter in the second game.
What Makes him a Scrappy?[]
- Some people question his change of appearance from Injustice: Gods Among Us to Injustice 2, especially his hair, given that the first Chapter of Injustice 2 played before the events of Injustice: Gods Among Us but his appearance in Injustice 2 doesn’t change in the slightest even when the time moves to the present. People consider this as a writing mistake.
- Also, suddenly he fights with a sword, while in Injustice: Gods Among Us he’s a prime skin for Nightwing who fights with his escrima sticks.
- His writing should look him as dark and ruthless, but the audience just cannot see him like that as his appearance and his voice just aren’t intimidating at all.
- In fact, it’s nearly impossible to take him seriously as his whole personality just has two central messages: He agrees with Superman’s desire to kill criminals, and he hates Batman. He just appears as a whiny child, who want’s attention, like when he tries to mock Batman as he doesn’t know about Supergirl.
- His quote about how Dick Grayson trusted him, but Batman never will, is extremely questionable. Because it was his fault that Dick Grayson died in the first place.
- He claims that he doesn’t “play sidekick or victim”. Even if should sound self-confident, it’s quite ironic because this claim is far away from reality. He is basically the textbook-definition of a sidekick. In the story every fight against him he talks about either Superman or Batman and his wager quote “Superman and I disagree” just proves it further. The fans just laugh about him, because he is so far away from reality that it’s hard to imagine that he means this not sarcastically.
- He is annoyingly arrogant. In fact, he’s got an ego that beats Kung Lao’s from the Mortal Kombat game series. That leads to moments in the story where Firestorm indicates that he is one of those children who thought they were better than their teachers, where he replies “No, I knew it.” Even if he should sound cool in this moment, he appears more pathetic for the audience.
- In two of his wagers in Injustice: Gods Anong Us, he stated he can’t be on the losing side if he’s on it. And he claimed seriously that he’s the upgrade to Batman, which is completely laughable because unlike Batman he’s only seen how he loses. It reminds at Bi-Hans quite ironic quote “Victors write history, and I do not lose.”
- Like Robin from Teen Titans Go!, he is rarely seen how he does anything heroic, so it’s completely incomprehensible why he really thinks of himself as a good guy.
- Also, he appears as all bark but no bite, as the players see how he brags about himself and how he says that he does, what needs to be done, but the players never see how he indeed does what needs to be done.
- In fact, the players barely see him at all and only when he loses. He is barely part of Superman’s plans in Injustice: Gods Among Us and he doesn’t do anything useful at all when Brainiac attacks despite seemingly being a key part of Superman’s regime and claiming that Superman was a better father than Batman ever was.
- While Superman’s tragedy still holds even after getting a tyrannical dictator and he’s still a key element in Earth being save from Brainiac and Wonder Woman is clearly made to be hated, Damian is supposed to be a cool and three-dimensional character, but he’s way too pathetic, arrogant, and whiny to be taken seriously and an extremely flat character, who just doesn’t say much apart from being a top tier sidekick.
Trivia[]
- He is the second injustice character to be a Scrappy. The first one is Reverse-Flash from Injustice 2.
- Technically he is the second Robin to be a scrappy, next to Robin King.
