NOTE: This article focuses on Daffy Duck's portrayal in the DePatie-Freleng shorts. |
Daffy Duck is the deuteragonist of the Looney Tunes franchise.
He is voiced by the late Mel Blanc.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Although he was transformed over the years from a chaotic screwball to the arrogant jerk that audiences know and enjoy him as today, in the DFE shorts his antagonistic traits were further exaggerated to a point where they were surprisingly out of character, even for him.
- When DePatie-Freleng Enterprises took over producing the cartoons in the 1960s, he was paired with Speedy Gonzales, which made for a poor character dynamic and bad chemistry. This was only really due to low budgets only allowing DFE to use a limited number of characters, primarily the former two characters and Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner. Plus, Daffy's antagonism of other characters made him come across as a far more inferior version of the more popular Yosemite Sam.
- His actions towards his victims are very cruel, petty, nasty and downright mean-spirited unlike his more light-hearted antics in the classic era.
- His dialogue in this era is always some kind of diatribe against other characters.
- He is actually willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, especially if this means using guns to attempt murdering Speedy and even Bugs Bunny himself!
- He is also not above breaking the law to get what he wants, so much that he could be considered a wanted criminal in-universe.
- He is one of the main reasons why the DFE shorts are the most hated Looney Tunes shorts.
- Overall, he is nothing more than a petulant, heartless sadist who only cares about himself.
Trivia[]
- Daffy's generally considered worst-ever act, which is sinking a cruise ship full of people, was not actually part of the DFE shorts (despite airing at the same time as them). Still, it's representative of his derailment during these years. Several other notably heinous and cruel moments of Daffy also come from the DFE shorts.
- Both the DFE shorts and the cruise ship incident are the main reasons why Daffy today qualifies as Inconsistently Heinous. Meaning that despite getting over that era, he remains one of the most historically criminal characters in the franchise.
