NOTE: This article specifically covers the character's representation in Surf's Up 2: WaveMania. The original version from the first film is not a Scrappy. |
Cody Maverick is the main protagonist in the Sony/WWE animated movie Surf's Up 2: WaveMania.
He was voiced by Jeremy Shada.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- While Cody did have an ego in the first movie, he was kept likable throughout and eventually learns that winning isn't that important; however in the sequel, Cody was flanderised into an unlikable jerk completely obsessed with winning, which makes everything he learned in the first movie come off as almost pointless.
- Despite the fact that Big Z was very clearly established as Cody's idol in the first movie, the sequel completely retcons that. For starters, Big Z doesn't appear at all in the movie, only being mentioned in passing by Mr. McMahon to explain why the Hang 5 are on Pen Gu Island. Most notable of all, Big Z being Cody's idol is entirely retconned out, with it now being stated that the Hang 5, primarily J.C had always been Cody's idols. This change was obviously pointless with how the first movie had already established Big Z as Cody's idol.
- A flashback showing Cody wearing Hang 5 merch, as well as Cody not even wearing the necklace Big Z gave him is a perfect example of how much the sequel completely ignores the first movie's original story, as well as how it serves as nothing more than a worthless advertisement for the WWE.
- Fans of the original movie did not like Cody's recast as Jeremy Shada, due to Shia LaBeouf not returning to reprise his role as Cody. While Shada is a great voice actor, he does not do a good job at replicating LaBeouf's original performance.
- Cody went out of his own way to try and sabotage Tank while everyone was hang gliding across a volcano, causing him to bump into Chicken Joe and almost get him killed. While Cody's actions are justified with Tank's treatment of him in the movie, it does not change the fact he could've easily gotten Chicken Joe or Tank killed, nor that he went out of the way to try and sabotage Tank in the first place.
- Despite Cody justifying his actions to the Hang 5 (who also rightfully call Cody out for what he did), it also does not excuse the fact he remains unlikable during the movie.
- His advertisements for his surfing school are completely clichéd, primarily because it only serves as an excuse for the movie to try and replicate its predecessor's mockumentary format.
- While Cody does redeem himself by saving Tank's life at the end of the movie, he never shows any remorse for his actions in the movie, primarily his actions in the volcano.
- While Surf's Up 2: WaveMania was panned by critics and audiences for its terrible writing and mere existence being that of a WWE advertisement, Cody's character assassination is one of the major criticisms fans have given towards the movie, given how much it makes its predecessor pointless.
