Characters that are meant to be "dark" and "ruthless" and are meant to be interesting but often come off as annoying and try-hard shock value.
The writers’ attempt to make them dark ends up looking exaggerated in the audience’s eyes, sometimes to the point of becoming unintentionally comedic.
