Carl The Ape Man is the main antagonist of the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? episode "Never Ape an Ape Man". He was a stuntman who dressed up as the Ape Man, to get revenge on John Maxwell for not appointing him the lead role of his movie.
He was voiced by the late Vic Perrin.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He has one of the most uncreative and boring designs for any monster (if it can even be counted) in the Scooby-Doo franchise. Its nothing but a regular gorilla.
- His plan is blatantly incompetent, to the point that its almost a miracle he wasn't immediately discovered. He tries to get the movie cancelled by disguising as the Ape Man, pretending to have been locked in a truck during its attacks while hes disguised as it.
- His motives for his actions are extremely petty, as he took the role of Ape Man to take revenge on John Maxwell for not appreciating his talents and giving him the lead role in his movie, which is laughably petty considering the latter still hired Carl to be in the movie as a stunt man.
- He leaves almost no threatening presence whatsoever, heavily highlighted by the fact he was one of the few monsters that didn't scare Scooby. This was to the point where he even managed to intimidate Carl.
- He is taken to a new level of incompetence by being the only culprit to take his mask off while he's still haunting the area, subsequently allowing Shaggy to take a photo of him. He's also rather easily defeated after that.
Trivia[]
- He's the second Scrappy in the Scooby-Doo franchise after Buck Masters, even preceding the character that the term was named after (although Buck Masters wasn't considered a Scrappy when the episode was released, and has only become this for the modern re-evaluation, so Carl could count as the franchise's oldest Scrappy).
