~ The description being wrong for opposing Brawlers |
Buzz Lightyear is an infamous time-limited Legendary Brawler in Brawl Stars, available during the Pizza Planet event until February 4th, 2025.
He was nigh-universally hated by the players of the game due to being a game-breaker in every one of his three forms, alongside the fact he was already maxed out upon being unlocked when the same cannot be done for any other Brawler.
He was voiced by Tim Allen.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He was, and still is, hated by the majority of Brawl Stars’ player base due to how overpowered he is, which makes the game very hard to play in a way that is frustrating rather than challenging and intense. The following mechanics of Lightyear contribute to just how infuriating and unfair it was to fight him in-game:
- His Laser Mode is infamous for dealing a hefty amount of damage with its main projectile, which then leaves a burning effect that lasts quite long, with his special attack (Super) only making that even more difficult to handle, since it’s a wide spray of lasers that can deliver an extreme amount of damage if they all land and is much harder to dodge. Along with having an HP pool that isn't super low despite the mode being for long-range battles, this Super can easily save Lightyear in close-combat scenarios where he should get countered just like most other Brawlers in the Marksman category.
- In his Saber Mode, Lightyear swings a sword that deals heavy melee damage that can be done so to multiple enemies at once, with his Super allowing him to fly seemingly all the way across a server and incapacitate enemies with knockback upon landing. While it does have a bit of a delay, the Super is still unreasonably hard to avoid, since he doesn’t give any indication of where he will hurl himself and does so extremely fast upon doing so. Additionally, the mode's HP setting being a bit on the higher end and built-in Tank trait means that Lightyear's opponents are very much limited in defending themselves from a safe distance, since continuously damaging him will quickly charge his Super and then allow him to easily come close. This is as if his Gadget wasn't already an effective enough way to approach enemies.
- His Wing Mode has a total damage output of 12,000 at point-blank range, which means he can annihilate almost any Brawler with two or three ammo slots with the clear exception of Frank (who has more than 13,000 health points when fully leveled up). This means that there are too few if any Brawlers that have a shot at out-damaging him, and this is especially troubling to the ones that are very reliant on getting close to opponents to utilize their attacks at enough strength. Even Brawlers that outrange Lightyear's Wing Mode didn't counter him too well, since he has enough HP to be difficult to kill and a Super that makes him fly over a long distance to easily escape or catch up to fleeing enemies while dropping explosives that add a great load of extra damage.
- His Gadget is a dash that covers a distance long enough to weasel out of the few opportunities his opponents have to actually take him down and to nearly guarantee a kill on almost every other Brawler he pursues.
- His Hypercharge, while not adding or changing the mechanics of his Supers and attacks like the tool normally does to Brawlers, still gives decent buffs to all of his mode's stat values, making him all the more frustrating to put up with.
- Although he was the most played Brawler of all during the Toy Story collaboration, this is mostly because of players not wanting to get curb-stomped by other Lightyear players, to get rewards from his special Mastery Road including the title “To infinity and beyond!”, and to receive the trophies needed to get high-tier Trophy Boxes. When it comes to any actual enjoyment of using Lightyear, the general consensus is that his gameplay is incredibly monotonous, repetitive, and cheap due to how little effort it took to succeed and dominate matches with him.
- Speaking of his repetitiveness, almost every match was full of him during the first week or two of Lightyear's presence, which ended up breaking the diversity of Brawlers of each match despite there always being some who were played much more than others. Even after his usage noticeably dropped over time, it was still not at all uncommon to see so many Lightyear players in a single match of any game mode, particularly in 3v3s, 5v5s, and the newly released 2v2s, where players were constantly pinned against teams that had multiple of him.
- While several other Brawlers such as Edgar, Kenji, Moe, and Kit have also received a lot of hate for being too overpowered or annoying in-game, the hate has largely died down from the nerfs they have received due to their sheer strength prior and/or they have big enough fanbases to be Base-Breaking, with many genuinely enjoying their gameplay and faithfully keeping their pick-rates up throughout Brawl Stars’ history. On the other hand, Buzz Lightyear is only played whenever players are frustrated or want to make progress towards the rewards from his special trophy system and Mastery Road, rather than enjoying his gameplay, and continues to be hated and dreaded by the fanbase even after his removal. Alongside this, the only set of nerfs Buzz received didn't do much to make him more tolerable, especially since his Wing Mode was left completely untouched by the balance changes.
- Unlike other Brawlers who have compelling or entertaining personalities with funny and catchy voice lines, Buzz's lines amount to phrases no more than two words or were borrowed from the Toy Story movies such as the famous "To infinity and beyond!", making them unoriginal and flat.
- He overall fails to be satisfying and exciting for any players to use as the developers intended and is instead viewed as a burdened experience that broke the Brawl Stars' already somewhat questionable balancing, as the game gave numerous new players a bad first impression, since they kept getting easily defeated by him and had an unnecessarily hard time using low power level Brawlers that they couldn't upgrade enough thanks to Buzz already being maxed out upon accessing him and being that way at ALL trophy ranges. In the same process, new and returning players who picked up the game when Buzz Lightyear was no longer available to collect as a Christmas gift were put at even more of a disadvantage.
- Even though there have been complaints over his departure happening several hours earlier than expected, these were only from players who were extremely close to obtaining Gold III on his Mastery Track and receiving its title as a reward, with the confusion being quickly solved when Supercell gave the title to those who had 15,000 to 15,999 Mastery Points. After this, almost no one, including those who initially barely missed out on Buzz Lightyear's Mastery Title, was upset over his removal. Instead, players were relieved that the game has finally become much more balanced.
- Overall, he can be considered one of the biggest, if not the MAIN, reason for the controversy surrounding Brawl Stars' collaboration with Toy Story, with his excessively game-breaking nature making people worried about the possibility of future temporary Brawlers affecting the game for much worse than better. Throughout the Pizza Planet event, Buzz Lightyear was so despised that two subreddits dedicated to expressing hate towards him were made, with one being deleted by the time he was removed, and the other being reserved for the likely event of more time-limited Brawlers appearing in the coming months.
Trivia[]
- He and Zurg are the only versions of Buzz Lightyear to be considered Scrappies.
