Bunga is the deuteragonist in the 2015 TV film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and its 2016 follow-up series The Lion Guard and the tritagonist of Season 3, both based on the 1994 film The Lion King. He's a honey badger who is the adoptive nephew of Timon and Pumbaa, the adoptive brother of Simba, the best friend of Kion and, along with Kion and their friends Fuli, Ono, and Beshte, form The Lion Guard to protect The Pride Lands from threats such as hyenas.
He was voiced by Joshua Rush.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- First of all, he is just a replacement of Timon and Pumbaa, being a comic relief character with the phrase "Hakuna Matata" and had moments of farting and even having his own catchphrase "Zuka Zama!", it doesn't help that Timon and Pumbaa already have a mixed reception.
- He is supposed to be a comic relief but he turned out to be more unfunny and annoying.
- He is dumb and incompetent making stupid choices.
- He always steps on Ushari and beats him, and while they were accidents, he still smirks about it and never apologizes to him, the only time he ever apologized to him was because he was gripped by him.
- Many fans find him getting bitten by Ushari in "Fuli's New Family" satisfying and karmic because he bullied him episodes prior.
- Due to his recurring abuse of Ushari, he is indirectly responsible for his villainy and Scar's return. For those reasons, some viewers even expressed sympathy for Ushari, when he, while trying to attack Kion while avenging Scar, got pushed into the lava to his death (from which Ono saved only Bunga).
- He gets no character development. Even Janja one of the main antagonists of the series gets some development.
- In "Friends to the End", he kept accusing Kion of being evil despite knowing that he is corrupted by the venom in his scar and despite him being his best friend.
- In "Bunga and the King", which is possibly his worst episode, he keeps goofing around and disrespecting Simba despite him being the king. Though it was out of innocency instead of malice.
- While The Lion Guard is in no way a universally beloved or hated series, Bunga has taken more hate than most of the other characters due to his annoying and unfunny behavior and his constant bullying towards Ushari.
- Overall, he is merely a Replacement Scrappy for Timon and Pumbaa, an unneeded addition to the franchise, and an annoying unfunny jerk.
