Buck Masters is the main antagonist of the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? episode "Decoy for Dognapper". He was the owner of Big Red, a champion show dog and the true culprit behind the Witch Doctor and the Ghost of Geronimo.
He was voiced by the late Don Messick.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- While most of the monsters and the culprits have at least a small fanbase, Buck Masters and his disguise remains one of the least popular of them all, despite appearing in the beloved original show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?.
- His disguise, the Witch Doctor, was considered all right at the time the original episode was released, but has poorly aged since then, and is now seen as an offensive and racist Native American caricature.
- He's also one of rare culprits in the original show that didn't really have any reason to be disguised; the Native American theme doesn't really tie to anything going on with the dognapping crime, and there wasn't anyone in the place he wanted to keep secret before he send his minion to kidnap Scooby (despise knowing Mystery Incorporated was investigating him) and there was already a projection of the Ghost of Geronimo in the place, which would theoretically be enough to scare people off, so he only uses the disguise to interact with his minion, which makes no sense.
- He's the only character with whom the gang interacts during the case (aside from a minor character who gives Shaggy his motorcycle), and directly pointed to the dogs' disappearance, making it blatantly obvious who the criminal is.
- As a monster, he completely lacks presence and isn't intimidating at all.
- His motivation of wanting to win a dog contest is seen by many as extremely petty and found his plan needlessly elaborate for such a minor thing in comparison to other villains that had more elaborate motives.
- While not his fault by being the very first villain to kidnap Daphne, he did start the trend the character would become infamous for later on.
- Even his defeat and summation is rather poor. Instead of a setting up a trap like the gang usually does, he's simply surrounded by dogs and captured.
Trivia[]
- He's the earliest Scrappy in the Scooby-Doo franchise, even preceding the character that the term was named after.
- Probably out of no longer being seen in good eyes by modern viewers, the Witch Doctor was replaced by Space Kook (who's more fondly viewed today) in the recreation of the opening theme in the 2020 movie Scoob!. He's also one of the rare monsters introduced in the original show that almost never gets referenced in later media.
