~ Buck Cluck |
Buck Cluck is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Abby Mallard) in Disney's 46th full-length animated feature film Chicken Little.
He is the father of the titular protagonist, and Chloe Cluck's widowed husband.
He was voiced by the late Garry Marshall.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- The criticism he receives revolves around the way he acts towards his son. While he wasn’t meant to be a perfect and supportive father, the film tried to portray him as a flawed parent who nonetheless still tries to do what’s best for his son. Instead, most viewers felt that the writing made him come off as neglectful and resentful towards Chicken Little rather than what was intended.
- In particular, many people noticed that he doesn't do anything to stop the Oakey Oaks citizens from bullying Chicken Little after his acorn incident and seems embarrassed over that moment and of his son in general. This is the main reason he receives criticism, as many viewers thought he should have tried to defend Chicken Little rather than leave him to face all the mockery and bullying on his own.
- His praise towards Chicken Little after he wins the baseball game is seen as shallow rather than heartwarming, as it came off to many viewers that he was doing it only because he was relieved that he wasn't humiliated by his son costing the game and not out of any actual love. Buck once again abandoning his son after a failed attempt at warning Oakey Oaks of the aliens’ presence only further solidified the viewers' take on this matter.
- Although he is heavily implied to be a widower, this doesn’t get particular focus in the movie, with his probable struggles not being shown and therefore contributing to the viewers’ dislike of him, since the film provided no grounds for him to derive sympathy from the audience.
- While he does regret his actions at the end of the movie and even defended Chicken Little from several aliens when saving Oakey Oaks from the entire invasion, it's seen by viewers as too little, too late. This is especially considering his constant and needless verbal reminders to Little about being supportive after he apologized for being a bad parent, which came off as forced and made him seem insincere about changing for the better.
- He is one of the biggest reasons Chicken Little received such a mixed reception and was considered one of Disney’s weakest films. Even those who enjoyed the movie agreed with its detractors that Buck Cluck was among the worst aspects of it and a very unlikable character in general.
Trivia[]
- Buck Cluck has been labeled "The Worst Disney Father" by many critics of the movie.
- However, despite this title in WickedBinge's "Disney Fathers: Good to Evil" video, Buck was ranked as the third worst father, with Pete from A Goofy Movie being the second and Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame being the worst.
- There is a deleted scene on the DVD that shows Buck cooking breakfast for Chicken Little. When accidentally changing the TV to the news channel which shows the one year anniversary of the sky falling incident he tries to turn the TV off to no avail, and when Chicken Little sees a clip he hadn't seen before of Buck calling him crazy he instantly feels remorse knowing how hurtful that comment was. He later defends him from being harassed by a crowd of angry reporters. Some fans believe it would be better if this scene had been left in the final product, because it makes Buck more likable by showing that he does care about his son, and would have most likely prevented him from being a Scrappy, and possibly into the Base Breaking territory.
- There is another deleted scene on the DVD where Buck gets a pep talk from Mayor Turkey Lurkey, which was likely removed so the latter would be more comedic. Fans felt it should have been kept in the film to make Buck more likable.
