Captain Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is the main antagonist of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth entry in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
He was portrayed by Ian McShane.
What Makes Him The Scrappy?[]
- Fans tend to regard him as wasted potential despite being played by Ian McShane, having a very cool introduction, a cool ship and a very powerful and awesome supernatural sword and having a personal history with Jack and Barbossa by being the one who ended up sinking and capturing the Black Pearl. All of these however is barely shown on screen besides his very first scene in the movie with some of his major feats being only mentioned and the character never displaying any charm or particular nastiness which makes the character not very memorable in comparison to his predecessors.
- He somehow managed the find all the keys to find the Fountain of Youth in barely 15 days (based on the vision of the Quartermaster) while Jack and Barbossa took over 20 years (based on the official timeline of the series) to find it despite possessing the Sao Feng' Mao Kun Map, which many fans had a hard time buying and only makes Jack and Barbossa look incompetent
- His motivation is that a vision of his Quartermaster indicates he will die in 15 days by the hand of a one-legged man. A lot of fans feel this immediatly killed all the tension considering is blatantly obvious is Barbossa (who is introduced to the movie by suddenly having a peg leg with no explanation about it yet)
- His relationship with Angelica has being criticized for being inconsistent, he's shown in certain scenes to consider her the most precious thing in the world in scenes where she couldn't have heard (or at least know she was hearing him) while in other moments she's treated as dispensable to him and even seems okay with sacrifice her in a petty Russian Roulette game for no real good reason.
- His death is also seen as anticlimactic after so much build-up. Being stabbed with a poisoned sword in his hand while he was distracted and then tricked by Jack Sparrow into drinking the wrong cup to accidentally save Angelica. To be fair he does give a fair fight against Barbossa but some of his advantage can be related to Barbossa being much weaker that the usual in the same movie,
- Some fans also feel his existence doesn't make any sense in-universe. As the previous movie implied that Edward Teague (Captain Jack Sparrow's dad and Keeper of the Code) was the in-universe version of Blackbeard having a similar name to his real-life counterpart (Edward Teach) and being a pirate feared by all pirates and now there's another infamous pirate with a similar name and reputation and yet they have not relationship. Others question how such an important pirate had no role in the War Against Beckett or the Brethren Court in the third movie.
