~ One of Bane's only quotes, aside from grunts and yells. |
Antonio Diego, better known as Bane is the secondary antagonist of Batman and Robin. He is a henchman of Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze.
He was portrayed by Michael Reid MacKay in his normal form and the late Robert Swenson in his enhanced form.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Unlike nearly all DC media, where he is a well-received genius bruiser who has defeated Batman in his own arc, this Bane is a simple henchman who is quite unintelligent, mostly capable of uttering grunts and snarls, and docilely doing all of Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy's bidding without question.
- While his design is similar to his comics appearance, it isn't enough to offset his characterization issues.
- Although he was stated to be a serial killer in Pena Duro, which could explain his backstory as Bane, the film wastes it by shaping his origin as Bane from Jason Woodrue's experiments, a sharp contrast from his more sympathetic and interesting childhood growing up in Pena Duro.
- As soon as Batgirl and Robin get through his brute strength, he's unceremoniously defeated once his Venom tubes are pulled out, making him even more incompetent.
- While Batman and Robin is infamous for its campiness and contrasting the previous three films' darker and action-based tones, the other villains are praised for their unique performances: Poison Ivy has many charismatic and evil is cool moments, Mr. Freeze has many funny moments via his puns, and even Jason Woodrue has a hammy performance. Bane has none of those qualities and is seen as one of the worst points of the film.
