What failed with the character?	Although he is meant to be a sympathetic, his obnoxious behavior and obsessive attitude towards Erina made it hard to sympathize with him. He is a one-dimensional villain who relies on an overpowered ability to defeat characters.

Asahi Nakiri, fromerly known as Asahi Saiba, is a major antagonist in Food Wars, specifically as the main antagonist of the BLUE arc.

He is an expert underground chef who arranges the invasion of Totsuki Academy with the goal of not only forcing the critic, Erina Nakiri, to marry him, but also to humiliate Sōma Yukihira, the son of Asahi's former mentor. At the end of the series, he is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Azami Nakiri and is adopted into the Nakiri family.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?

• He doesn’t show much personality, especially compared to the more complex and eccentric characters in the series. His main personality trait is his arrogant and obnoxiously jerkish behavior that gets old quickly, as well as his creepy obsession with Erina.
• He is an overpowered villain who relies heavily on his Crossed Knives ability to mimic rival chefs and defeat them that way. This causes him to easily defeat major characters like Joichiro with ease and all the other characters to talk constantly about how powerful he is.
• Although he is meant to be sympathized with for never knowing his father, being abused by his mother, and feeling abandoned by his mentor, his arrogant attitude, obsessive behavior, and criminal activity makes his trauma fall flat, especially since his trauma is only shown in flashbacks and Joichiro actually offered to take him to his restaurant, only for Asahi to refuse as he didn’t want to share Joichiro with Sōma.
• His rivalry with Sōma is underdeveloped, as the only reason he hates Sōma is because he’s the son of Joichiro and Asahi is thus jealous of their bond.
• His defeat is underwhelming, as the only reason he lost the tournament, and thus his bet with Sōma, is because the judges recognized that Sōma had more identity in his cooking than Asahi, which then brings up why Asahi got as far as he did in the first place.
• Despite kidnapping (breaking into her house in the anime) Erina, lying about his credentials as a teacher, and engaging in other illegal activities, he is never actually punished for his actions and gets away Scott-free.

Trivia

• He and Mana Nakiri are the only Food Wars Scrappies to be part of the Nakiri Clan.
• Ironically, the maker of the series has stated that he likes Asahi more than Sōma.
