Anissa is a major antagonist in the Image Comics series Invincible. She is the most powerful female soldier of the Viltrum Empire, who was sent to supervise Mark Grayson/Invincible's progress on conquering Earth after Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man abandons his post.
She is voiced by Shantel VanSanten.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- For starters, she infamously assaulted and raped Mark after he and Atom Eve had broken up, before telling him to "man up" and say she will do it again if she didn't get pregnant, as she flew off. This ultimately led to Mark being traumatized and suffering PTSD as a result.
- Furthermore, this led to Anissa becoming pregnant with their son Marky, with her also starting a family with Scott Murphy, which many found to be an attempt to give Anissa some sympathetic moments, albeit unsuccesfully.
- This happened after Thragg was dethrone and Nolan become emperor. So she wasn't really being force to procreate but doing it anyway. Knowing Mark is the son of current emperor.
- Fans felt as though her redemption was forced, especially as Anissa never faces any sort of consequence for raping Mark. While both Atom Eve and Nolan attempted to attack her when she tried to apologise, Mark instead defends her by saying nothing happened.
- Her death at the hands of Thragg, while meant to be sympathetic, is often criticized by fans due to her telling Atom Eve that she had no regret for what she did to Mark, making her death unsympathetic to many.
- Overall, Anissa's status as a Karma Houdini for raping Mark, combined with her somewhat forced redemption, unearned sympathetic moments and death is why she is hated by the fandom, to the point that many hope the animated adaptation will either cut her more infamous parts or have her face consequences for her actions.
Trivia[]
- Although her comic version counts as a Scrappy, there's a small chance that Anissa's animated version may end up being written better, as the show has yet to adapt the events that made her a Scrappy. Although the chance is very low because the show is relatively comics accurate compare to other superheroes cartoon based on comics.
