Amarowat Anysia "Ani" Achola is the deuteragonist of 13 Reasons Why Season 3 and a tritagonist in Season 4. She is a new student at Liberty High who becomes wrapped up in the drama surrounding the school.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- She’s considered a Replacement Scrappy, since after the actress for Hannah Baker quit working with the show, she essentially became her replacement as the deuteragonist. Her introduction into the plot feels forced and out of nowhere, especially given how she becomes the narrator of the season three.
- She is has an annoying and seemly rude condescending tone when talking to others and almost never gets called out on it, other than a brief jab from Justin Foley.
- She is also almost immediately treated like a main character whom everyone is already friends with, despite having just transferred to the school, which to people felt unrealistic.
- As an extension, she is seen as a Mary Sue with practically no flaws who comes off as unrealistically perfect and smart. This makes her dull in comparison to every other character who has flaws that they must overcome.
- She comes off as nosy and questions everybody. It feels like she is intruding in everybody's business at times.
- Her relationship with Clay is considered uninteresting and has no chemistry, aside from their shared interest in robotics.
- She's seen as an hypocrite, as she becomes scared of Clay while having no problem with Bryce, a literal serial rapist.
- Related to this, she’s also disliked for being a morality pet who lead to his redemption, which felt out of nowhere to people since Bryce was portrayed as irredeemable in the first two seasons.
Trivia[]
- Grace Saif, who plays Ani, quit social media as she was cyberbullied for her role. Later, her co-stars Timothy Granaderos (who portrays Monty de la Cruz), Alisha Boe, Devin Druid and Anne Winters all came to her defense. Riverdale star Ashleigh Murray also defended her and revealed that she (Ashleigh) was a victim of racist cyberbullying too. Grace eventually started using social media again in January 2020.
