Amber Justine Bennett is a major character in the Amazon animated series Invincible adapted from the comic of the same name. She is the classmate and former girlfriend of the main protagonist, Mark Grayson/Invincible.
She was voiced by Zazie Beetz.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Almost all fans feel that romance arc with Mark adds nothing to the plot and takes up far too much time in the first season whereas much more interesting subplots are happening that fans want focused on. Additionally, the story also hints very clearly that Mark is going to end up with Eve Wilkins either way (as he did in the comics.)
- While her grievances with Mark are initially understandable as she, seemingly, didn't know about Mark's secret identity and responsibilities, this was later subverted after it's revealed that she actually knew Mark was a hero all along, making her come off as an egotistical control freak and causing the audience to lose any sympathy for her.
- It never was explain of how she figure out his secret identity and the plot didn't give any details or evidence to support this.
- She is disliked for her general rude attitude which is aimed towards not just Mark but other people as well. Examples include when she rudely ignores William throughout the car ride home from the college trip, despite being nice enough to ride her home. Many also do not like how she rudely says "so" when a frat guy introduces himself.
- She unintentionally comes off as unbelievably selfish to Mark when he reveals himself to be a superhero, her reaction is to scold him for not telling her sooner as she already knew. Mark reasons that he was saving innocent lives, but Amber believes it was more important for him to spend time with her at a soup kitchen and tell her his identity (which would put her at risk for knowing a famous superhero, which she should know given how smart she is.) She rudely tells him to "Fly Away, Fly Boy."
- She never gets called out on her rude behavior in-universe and is automatically forgiven and back in a relationship with Mark by the end of Season 1.
- And because of this she never gets any character development and is all of a sudden a "nice" and "kind" person, which fans see as a cheap, wasted and unrealistic way of fixing her character.
Trivia[]
- Only the TV series version of Amber qualifies as a Scrappy as the comic book version, while not exactly a memorable character, didn't do anything that made her intensely disliked.
- Additionally, the animated version of Amber is one of two Invincible Scrappies, along with Anissa.
