~ Amanda shouting through her loudspeaker, in the middle of an island full of dangerous dinosaurs, after being warned that shouting in this situation would be a bad idea. |
Amanda Kirby is the mother of Eric Kirby, the ex-wife of Paul Kirby, one of the two tritagonists (alongside her ex-husband) of Jurassic Park III and Ben Hildebrand's girlfriend. They tricked Alan Grant and Billy Brennan onto Isla Sorna in order to find their young son Eric, who disappeared on the island two months prior along with her boyfriend Ben.
She was portrayed by Téa Leoni.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Quite possibly the biggest idiot in the franchise, from shouting in the middle of an island full of dinosaurs even after being warned against such behavior to stubbornly ignoring Grant (the dinosaurs expert who was hired to help Amanda and her ex-husband at saving their son)'s advices.
- Even though she was meant to be a worried mother, many of her lines don't sound like a mother who's sickly worried for her son's life, but rather like a frustrated actress who shouts at her agent because she doesn't like the role she was given.
- As noble as her and Paul's goal of saving their son was, the movie heavily implies that getting him lost on the island was their fault in the first place. Since it happened on her watch, where both her son and her current boyfriend were lost, it's more her fault than Paul's. The fact that she admits that Paul is too careful to let it happen on his watch doesn't help the matter.
- She and Paul deceived Grant into helping them, thinking that being on a dinosaur-infested island (Isla Nublar) makes him automatically qualified to help them with saving their son from an island he hasn't even visited before (Isla Sorna), not even bothering telling him about the dinosaurs in the first place.
- Even though Paul was a full participant in the deception, at least he looks and behaves like a genuinely worried father and respects Grant's advices, while Amanda is worse due to being dumber and even less respectful.
- At times, it's not entirely clear whether or not Amanda even cares about Ben's sacrifice for Eric.
- She unintentionally helped Vic Hoskins rising to power when she left the pteranodon cage open, unknowingly giving him the opportunity to kill rogue pteranodons and position himself in a good place to become the head of security in Jurassic World.
- The movie's attempt to make her and the alpha raptor analogous to each other by being the one to give the raptor eggs back falls flat, because the alpha raptor is a better mother and smarter than her despite being a mere animal, in addition to all her unlikeable moments earlier in the movie, making her last moment of bravery feel too little and too late.
- The rekindling of her and Paul's bond was schmaltzy at best and an insult to the audience's intelligence at worst.
Trivia[]
- Amanda is the only Scrappy in the franchise who has no counterpart in the novel.
- Jurassic Park III is widely considered to be one of the worst (if not the worst) movie in the Jurassic Park franchise, and Amanda is considered to be one of the prime reasons for that sentiment.
