Abbot Frollo is the main antagonist of Dingo Pictures' poorly received mockbuster The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He is Quasimodo's oppressive adoptive father who desires to have the gypsy Esmeralda to abuse, but when she resists him, he tries to kill her.
He was voiced by Armin Drogat.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Although he is a rather funny character for many, it must be said that the main reason for this is that this adaptation of Victor Hugo's tragic novel looks so hackneyed and disgusting that every scene here is a pure meme showing how not to draw and make films. At the same time, the film tries to seem serious and give out "intriguing" lines, but given how everything is done, voiced and looks here, this is completely impossible. From which the overacting of the actors in some moments ultimately gives out meme phrases, like "You is the pope of fools." Also, due to the incredible poverty of the animation of the characters, there are also "comical" moments, like Frollo's "villainous" laughter or how he moans with his eyes closed when little Quasimodo screams in the prologue. All this does not allow you to take everything seriously here, and rather looks like a cheap parody of a famous Disney film. Accordingly, Frollo as a villain is also not perceived as such.
- However, all this might not have been so critical if this had been an adaptation in the form of a book, because then it would have been possible to justify that this is the style of the book, but instead we got a film that tried to suck up to the popularity of the Disney film of the same name.
- He has a boring design that makes him more of a background character rather than a main villain, as even the minor characters look much better than him. Also, his head is very ugly and looks like a pear, which further lowers his level as a villain, making him not stand out from the background tiles.
- He is "very impressive" in how pathetic he is in this movie, since he barely does anything in the movie, and the only two things he does at all are expressing hatred towards Esmeralda and giving orders to others, and that's it. He is just a dupe in the hands of the scriptwriter, who is needed to make a plot. Even though he attempted to rape Esmeralda, it was never really shown due to the lack of animation, making it seem like he never did anything to her or tried to (not to mention that comparing him to Judge Claude Frollo is pointless and stupid, for obvious reasons).
- It feels like he has no personality at all, as it is inconsistent: at first he seems like a calm and compassionate abbot who adopts Quasimodo, saving him from death, but then he is shown to be dismissive of Quasi, as seen by his failure to stop the people from bullying him, though why he didn't is unclear. Then he becomes xenophobic towards Esmeralda, out of nowhere, and then has a lustful desire for her when Quasimodo saves her from execution, also for no reason. Frollo simply has no personality, which is easily explained by the creators' lack of work and desire to make money.
- He has no backstory that would even explain his seemingly why he started to treat Quasimodo badly, behaving like an asshole towards him. This was largely ignored due to the creators' unwillingness to explain who he even is. Accordingly, the character ends up being an empty shell without any clear motivation or reasons for being angry.
- Overall, he's a dumbass because he does all his villainous things for no real reason, just because he suddenly became xenophobic at one point and that's it. There's nothing interesting or compelling about him that he deserves any praise for. He's just a really pathetic, half-assed villain with a stupid laugh that's even worse than the other characters in the movie and only makes you laugh because of his ridiculousness, lack of real motivation, and uselessness.
